Appropriate Sanitation Alternatives: A Technical and Economic Appraisal

Published for The World Bank by The John Hopkins University Press, 1982, with John M Kalbermatten and Charles G Gunnerson – World Bank Studies in Water Supply and Sanitation 1

“A convenient supply of safe water and the sanitary disposal of human wastes are essential ingredients of a healthy, productive life.  Water that is not safe for human consumption can spread disease; water that is not conveniently located can reduced the productive time and energy of the water carrier; and inadequate facilities for excreta disposal reduce the potential benefits of a safe water supply by transmitting pathogens from infected to health persons.  Over fifty infections can be transmitted from a diseased person to a healthy one by various direct or indirect routes involving excreta.”
